Osmanthus heterophyllus (false holly) is a dense, evergreen shrub with glossy, holly-like dark green leaves and intensely fragrant small white flowers in autumn. Reliable and fully hardy, it makes an excellent hedge or structural specimen, thriving in sun or partial shade and in fertile, moist but well-drained soils, including chalk. Moderate growth and easy maintenance; trim after flowering to shape.
